Any Upcoming Car Purchase Plans Between Now and 2020?

I can’t be the only one that shops cars well in advance of actually buying them. I also doubt I’m the only one that sees a new car and thinks, “That should be 50% off in 6 years...perfect!” So I wanted to ask, are there any vehicles you strongly believe may fall into your life between today and the end of 2020? They don’t have to be definite purchases, just cars you strongly feel will happen. I have several in mind but I’ll only see one of these in the next four years. I’ll list them from lowest to highest price just for the hell of it. *!!!!Warning: I love CUVs and SUVs, so brace yourselves!!!*

First Generation Infiniti FX (MY 2003-2008)

Kinja'd!!!

If I’m looking to spend between $8k-$10k, then I’ll be looking at one of these. Whether V8 or V6 will just depend on if I want a RWD or AWD vehicle (perks of living in a dry place). My preference is actually for the 2004-2006 model years rather than the later. Would love an FX35 AWD in blue or brown or an FX45 in that sweet copper/orange that was available.

Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI (2004, 2006-2008)

Kinja'd!!!

Project car! Theoretically this is as smooth as a Phaeton, as sporty as a Cayenne, better offroad than a Bentayga, and makes the same power as the Cummins turbo V8 diesel engine in the new Nissan Titan XD Diesel. The V10 makes 310 hp and 553 lb-ft while that Cummins is rated at 310 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque. I think the engines are about the same weight too, but there is a half ton difference in weight between the vehicles they are inside of. If one of these pops up between $9k-$12k and isn’t beaten to hell, and I want to spend $20k for no reason...hnnng!!! I wonder if an R50 conversion is worthwhile.

Volvo V60 (2015 only)

Kinja'd!!!

Gotta be AWD, so that means I5 or V6. Either way, I’m a happy chappy. If good looking 2.5L or 3.0L pop up for $16k and under, then it’s probably going to happen. Patience...

E71 BMW X6 (MY 2008-2012, First Generation)

Kinja'd!!!

I hate the rear end on these, but the prices are soooo low already! You can get into a 4 year old X6 M for half MSRP, and the lesser models are easily 50% depreciated right now and look like new because they are either off lease or just paid off. They are also easy to find in great condition, I like the size, I like the powertrains, I like the responsiveness of the fact that it’s one of the top handling urban attack vehicles you can buy. Plus I’ll be retired by the time I own a vehicle with larger rear tires than this thing, so fuck it! I’m shopping the full lineup.

GMC Yukon Denali (MY 2015 or 2016)

Kinja'd!!!

Pretty much once the WK2 is paid off and retired in 2019, I’m probably hoping to replace it with a 2015 GMC Yukon Denali. Any size is fine, but I need that 6.2L. Now if a 5.3L SLE or SLT pops up at a great price I’ll buy it, but I really want the 6.2L.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

You probably noticed that there isn’t a sportscar or pickup to be seen in this list. Sadly, those aren’t going to happen until after 2020. I am thinking about replacing my mom’s Camry with a low trim, current generation Mazda6 or CX-5 (since the 2004 Camry has cloth seats anyways, and the XF will stay her luxo-prestigy ride around her friends and church/work folks).

Here’s a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with 31,000 miles for $14,995.

Here’s a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with 36,000 miles for $13,995.

I’m sure that Mazda6 is ex-fleet, but I don’t even care because reliable, efficient, fun, a looker, and red. I’m tempted to go for it, but I know there will be better versions for the same price in another year or two. Plus, I know she wants a CUV. But since they wouldn’t be mine I don’t count the Mazdas on this list. Like I said, it will only be one of the vehicles listed up top between an emergency happening and 2020. Situation will tell which way to go, but I like having many paths to happiness in mind even if I can only take one.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

In summary, you can tell my situation as follows (add in a Mazda CX-5 somewhere in there):

FX - If a vehicle is totaled or grenades (emergency purchase).
V60 - If things go according to plan, will replace WK2 as work vehicle.
Yukon - If I end up making more but still need a mileage work vehicle.
X6 - If I end up making a lot more and find a great deal. Biggest engine I can get.
Touareg - I’m rich, bitch!!

I’d dig a 2008 or so Passat Wagon. Not too expensive, loads of space, good for moving (which I’m going to have to do), should be fun.

I haven’t test-driven one yet, but if something happens to make me not own the S2000 forever, then a current Camaro RS with the V6 is high on my list.

By the time my student debt is clear (I have a lot) hopefully car insurance is substantially cheaper so I ‘m no longer being offered £2000 a year to insure a 1.2 Clio.

That said I have been planning it out for an ideal world situation which is:

2018: £1,500 MK3 MR2 with £1,000 for insurance.

2019: £500 LS400 with £500 classic car insurance (I love loopholes).

Also yes it would be cheaper for me to own a RWD mid engined sports car and a V8 Limo then an underpowered French supermini.

I'm sure I'll be buying cars, but none are likely to be less than ten years old unless they're a VW Golf-E or 2015 Mustang GT in Deep Impact Blue. Current new and late-model cars hold pretty much zero interest for me otherwise. Other than those, the only vehicle I intend to make happen for sure is a diesel pickup, most likely a 7.3 Ford.

When I replace a vehicle, I never know I’m replacing it until about a week in advance, if that long. I hope to at least keep tha Taco until 2026, which would obliterate any length of ownership I’ve had for any vehicle.

Massive +1000000 on the Touareg V10 TDi. The want is so strong with that.

Next up is an E60 M5. Completely impractical and there’s much better to be had. But I’ve always loved V10s and the M5 is a must for me.

I’d also love to have an 05-06 Mini Cooper S, the last of the supercharged. MINIs have a special place in my heart, and the last supercharged ones are something to behold (and beat around any part of town going WOT every chance)

I’m definitely going to get another car by 2020, and it will NOT be a transverse V6! A sunroof is mandatory, as always.

At the top of my list is a Matrix XRS or Vibe GT (the Corolla XRS is ok too, but the back seat doesn’t fold). A manual transmission 4-cylinder is definitely what I want the most. Other cars under consideration are the xA (if I can find a release series with a sunroof, that is), Infiniti G20, Volvo V50, 01-03 Elantra GT, and the Astra (HUGE panoramic sunroof). Nothing wrong with a manual Accord or Camry (or TSX), either. The Mazda 5 is also cool as a manual minivan. I’ve always liked the Mazdaspeed 6 too.

2017 MKZ, or and Lincoln that says Black Label on it. I think those things are gonna be a CRAZY steal soon. Almost nobody even knows about Black Label Lincoln’s and they’re crazy nice. I also have had my eye on ecoboost AWD MKTs.

The new MKZ with that twin turbo 3.0 V6 at 400 hp is EPIC though. Hopefully an old person buys one this fall and babies it until I can thrash it.

Here is the thing:

Car salesmen might be assholes from time to time, but are trying to support families, kids, etc. Bills to pay. If you are not in the market in the next month or so, do not waste their time dicking around at dealerships PERIOD. It might be fun to drive the xyz, but the guywhose time you just wasted might be waiting another day to get his next turn to talk to another new prospect. Car salesmen make minimum wage if no sale. Research all you want but do not waste a working mans time. You are part of the problem of why car salespeople want to wring you for every penny (because of all the lame joyriders who are pricing a used car they might be interested in next year) Thanks for the rant space.

For me it happen a few earlier then I planned for upgrading. I owed $5500 on my Sonic loan, and it was worth around $7500. So I sold the Sonic and bought a slightly used 6spd Juke, put $2000 down. The payments are a bit more, but insurance it cheaper. The Juke is cheaper/month then the Sonic.

If your mom is like most older adults that I know, she’ll appreciate how easy ingress and egress is in the CX-5. I bought my wife a 2016 CX-5 Grand Touring and we love it - already done several road trips and racked up 6K miles. Not saying the 6 is a bad choice, but the CX-5 has a lot going for it.

The V60 is a fine choice, but I think you meant I6, not V6.

As for future purchases, once we have kids the CX-5 or my own Kazda6 will bs replaced with a 2017+ CX-9 or Volvo XC90, but probably the Mazda (we drove a Signature model last week and it compares well to the Volvo, though admittedly not quite as safe or indulgently-luxurious). I’d like to think we’ll have a 2015+ Mustang before having kids but that’s looking less likely.

My 2012 Panamera is getting replaced with a Macan. That should be here by the end of the summer. I might trade that in on a Levante S depending upon the interior. Regardless, that car will be traded in 2020 for a different daily.

My 2013 C4S will be replaced with another 911 cabriolet in 2017.

I will need a winter car for the first time ever this year and I am looking at a used E70 from CarMax or a new G-Wagen. I would sell the BMW at the end of the winter if I went that route, but I would keep the G because I love them so much.

I imagine my boyfriend will replace his Range Rover within the next four years, and I am urging him to trade his Lotus for something more comfortable considering he has only driven in five times in three years because it hurts his back. It makes me sad and it’s taking up carriage house space so it’s got to go.

Your counterpoint is correct. My point is, do not plan a 2020 purchase for what is new now. I love building a pipeline and will keep in touch, but car tourism does exist. I will happily spend hours with just looking, but dont be the one who read the article abt whatever and wants to see if it is as fast as your whatever...when in no position to buy.

I just change cars so fast it’s very tough to know, I really wanted an Abarth but I know some people that work at FCA and at their advice I have put that past me.

I really want a 5cyl Focus RS soon-ish, I really want an AMG car and most likely I will get a Ducati, probably a Scrambler in the coming years, not to mention trying to get my SO to finally learn how to drive and buying him something simple like a Versa (he loves those) but I’m aiming at like a Volvo or an A1 by the time we get married in like 2-3 years.

By 2022 I want a 911 or a 4C or maybe even an M3 or C63S.

I can promise you that myself as well as both of my parents will be getting at least one different car between now and 2020. I am all over the place as far as looking at cars, but 2020 will be the year I graduate college, and since I’m not taking out student loans we’ll see what’s in the cards. I’d guess my mom will be in a 2010 Audi A4 Avant, because that’s what she wants, and my dad will be in a Model 3, Lexus GS, CTS, X5, or something else that would make him seem like he plays golf (he doesn’t).
